Dancing with the Stars 6: Penn Jillette eliminated

penn-jillette.jpgMagician and comedic performer Penn Jillette was the first male contestant sent home in season 6 of Dancing with the Stars. He joked following his elimination that he was going to continue to rehearse all week and will peform next week in the parking lot outside the ballroom. He told Tom Bergeron that is was not a protest, but rather the “joy of the dance” that would keep him going.

Cristià¡n de la Fuente was the other dancer on the hot seat as the final two and I for a moment I thought he might be the one to go. He is not that well known in the United States so he may not be pulling as many popular votes.

The female contestant heading home will be announced later tonight.

Dancing with the Stars Season 6: Week 2

Steven Guttenberg and Anna Trebunskaya – (Mambo) While I appreciate his enthusiasm and his exuberance, his dancing is just not there. Also, why did he have his mouth open the whole dance? Scores: 6/5/5

Cristià¡n de la Fuente and Cheryl Burke – (Quick Step) This routine was just okay for me. I mean, Cheryl was great and the routine was good, but Christian just didn’t wow me. Scores: 7/6/7

Monica Seles and Jonathon Roberts – (Mambo) She seemed so dull next to the music that they chose (“Never Gonna Get it”) It almost seemed like she was too slow for the music or something. She also still looks uncomfortable. Scores: 5/5/5

Penn Jillette (Performer/Magician) and Kym Johnson – (Quick Step) I thought he was better than last week and I liked the fun elements to the routine. However, at some points I could almost see his him counting and his movements did not seem natural or comfortable at times. Scores: 6/6/5

Priscilla Presley and Louis van Amstel – (Mambo) Her dress was a bit odd I thought, but I liked when he spun her around on the floor again. She didn’t have enough hip action for the mambo I thought and she seemed a bit slow at times. Scores: 7/7/7

Shannon Elizabeth and Derek Hough – (Quick Step) I thought that she seemed a lot more comfortable this week and I thought the routine was a lot of fun. Scores: 8/8/8

Marisa Jaret Winokur and Tony Dovolani – (Quick Step) Another high energy performance for them this week. I just love her, but her at times it looks like her feet couldn’t quite keep up with Tony. Scores: 7/7/7

Marlee Matlin and Fabian Sanchez – (Mambo) I thought that she did a fabulous job again this week and enjoyed the routine a lot. Scores: 8/8/8

Kristi Yamaguchi and Mark Ballas – (Mambo) Another fabulous job for these two. I thought it was a near flawless routine from the costumes, to the choreography to the execution. She is so fast and nails all the spins with ease. Scores: 9/9/9.

Jason Taylor and Edyta Sliwinska – (Mambo) A very fun routine and I thought they were great together. Even my husband had to give them a clap and he doesn’t really like the show. Scores:9/9/9

Adam Carolla and Julianne Hough – (Mambo) I thought he did better than last week and this routine was more fun that last week. However, he still seemed a bit too stiff and spent too much time flipping over on the floor and not enough time moving about for my liking. Scores: 6/7/6

Mario (R&B singer) and Karina Smirnoff – (Quick Step) Mario’s footwork was better this week and overall I thought it was a good routine to watch, although a bit unoriginal as far as the choreography. Scores: 9/8/9

Tomorrow the lowest scoring female and the lowest scoring male will be sent home. I think it will be Monica Seles for sure for the women. The men are little difficult to judge. I think that Steven, Penn or Adam could go home based on their judge scores. It will come down to who votes. Although Adam has a lot of fans in general, have they been watching and voting? I could see Steve getting more votes because of his personality. Anything can happen I guess!

Current DWTS contestant expecting a baby

Current Dancing with the Stars contestant Marissa Jaret Winokur is expecting a baby! Don’t worry, though, it won’t affect her dancing because the child is being carried by a surrogate mother, who is currently five months along.

Winokur, who is married to Judah Miller, the writer of King of the Hill, survived cervical cancer seven years ago. She told People magazine that no matter what happens on this season of DWTS, she will “have the best prize”– a baby.

Dancing with the Stars Season Six: The Women

Shannon Elizabeth and Derek Hough – (Cha Cha Cha) I thought that she did pretty good and she has long lines, which is good, but she seemed a bit awkward in her movements, and not as graceful as she could be. I wonder if her short skirt will help get her more votes? Scores: 7/7/7

Monica Seles and Jonathon Roberts – (Fox Trot) She looked uncomfortable and not relaxed throughout. Not painful to watch exactly, but not really pleasant either. Scores: 5/5/5

Marisa Jaret Winokur and Tony Dovolani – (Cha Cha Cha) This was a fun routine. Marisa has a lot of energy and she can dance, although the routine seemed a bit repetitive. The judges also thought that it was not very Cha Cha, which reminds me of Sabrina Bryan’s first routine last year that they also criticized for having too much hip-hop. Scores: 6/6/6

Priscilla Presley and Louis van Amstel – (Fox Trot) I thought this routine was very well choreographed and much more interesting than we typically see on the first night. It seemed like he was dragging her around a bit at times, but overall I thought she did very well. I can’t seem to get past how overly plastic her face is, though. I am sure that is wrong, but it is the truth. Scores: 8/8/8

Kristi Yamaguchi and Mark Ballas – (Fox Trot) She was fantastic, just like I knew she would be based on her figure skating background. I found it very enjoyable, as did all three judges. Scores: 9/9/9

Marlee Matlin and Fabian Sanchez – (Cha Cha Cha) This was a good routine and it certainly didn’t seem that her inability to hear was a problem for her at all, like some had predicted.  Scores: 7/7/8

Next week everyone will get a chance to perform again, before one man and one woman is eliminated.  My money (based on this week only, of course) is on Adam Carolla and Monica Seles.

Dancing with the Stars Season Six: The Men

Tonight was the men’s turn to debut on Dancing with the Stars. Tomorrow the women will debut. The best part is that there is no elimination this week, so everyone will survive to dance next week. I like that because it would be sad to put all the practice in and be out after one night.

This season, rather than recap the shows in detail, I will just give my impression of the dances and the judge scores.

Penn Jillette (Performer/Magician) and Kym Johnson – (Cha Cha Cha) He is an entertaining guy, but he danced/walked (more walking than dancing) a bit like Frankenstein. His personality could pull him through the competition while he learns how to dance. Scores: 5/6/5

Jason Taylor (Miami Dolphin) and Edyta Sliwinski – (Fox Trot) He did a great job dancing-wise, but had a look of fear/apprehension on his face most of the dance. Once he gets more experience and can relax a bit, I think he could go far. He had beautiful lines and was elegant. Scores: 7/8/7

Cristià¡n de la Fuente (Chilean actor; on Ugly Betty) and Cheryl Burke – (Cha Cha Cha) She was great. I loved her dress. I was not too impressed with him. Kind of boring. Scores: 7/7/7

Adam Carolla (Radio host) and Julianne Hough – (Fox Trot) He was much better than I thought he would be, although that is not saying too much. I had him pegged as a Mark Cuban-esque dancer, but I think that with practice he will be a better caliber than that. That being said, he had an awful grimace on his face much of the dance and needs to relax. Scores: 5/5/5

Mario (R&B singer) and Karina Smirnoff – (Cha Cha Cha) Karina had to have surgery for a herniated disc just prior to the season.  Mario’s R&B dance experience served him well and he was great. Far above and beyond any of the other contestants. Scores: 8/8/8

Steven Guttenberg and Anna Trebunskaya – (Fox Trot) He was pretty okay overall.  It looked like he was having fun, but it also looked like he forgot the steps at one point.  I have to agree with the judges that there was a charming quality to him, which caught me by surprise.  Scores: 6/6/6

The women will have their debut tomorrow night.  Check back for my recap!

Julianne Hough saving virginity

julianne-hough-cosmo-girl.jpgDancing with the Stars professional Julianne Hough revealed to Cosmo Girl magazine that she remains a virgin and does not drink or smoke.  Julianne, who is 19, said that she is waiting “that special person” and that the decision to have sex before marriage is a personal one.

I often forget how young she is because of the level of her dancing talent.  Julianne is featured on the cover of the latest issue, on newsstands now.

Sabra Johnson turns down High School Musical 3

sabra_johnson.jpg Saying that she “had a prior commitment when they wanted to start filming,” So You Think You Can Dance champion Sabra Johnson turned down a role in High School Musical 3.

The film, which is likely to make oodles of money, will have to do without Sabra.  Her reaction, “It’s a bit of a bummer.”  I wonder what prior commitment she had?  No word on what other projects she has going on at this time.
