Reality Dancing would like to wish a Happy Birthday to So You Think You Can Dance creator, judge, and producer Nigel Lythgoe! According to Wikipedia, Nigel is 58 today!

The SYTYCD dancers all returned to Los Angeles from their week-long vacation over the weekend and, according to Jaimie Goodwin’s Twitter entry, rehearsals were held on Sunday, in addition to a party for Nigel’s birthday!

I hope that the dancers all enjoyed their time off, because it is back to the hard work of rehearsals and performances!

Their hair should be in place this week

According to Blogging So You Think You Can Dance, this week’s guest judge on SYTYCD will be the director of the new Hairspray movie Adam Shankman. This version of Hairspray is based on the Broadway musical version. Hairspray is all about a dance show, similar to American Bandstand, so Shankman certainly should know a good dancer when he sees one. He is also scheduled to choreograph the opening number on Thursday’s results show, which I am sure will be a fun, upbeat number.

Nick Lazzarini Update

Are you curious what the original “America’s Favorite Dancer” is up to? Nick Lazzarini, the winner of season one of So You Think You Can Dance has his own website at Nick Lazzarini Dance.

According to his site, he has been teaching at JUMP: The Alternative Convention. Current SYTYCD contestant Danny Tidwell has signed up to instruct there next season. Nick’s website also includes a photo gallery and a collection of print and online articles about Nick.

Jessi Peralta Petitions

The controversy and complaining regarding last weeks dismissal of Jessi Peralta from So You Think You Can Dance? is still going on, a week after she was kicked off the show. There are now two petitions online relating to the Jessi cause. If you want an explanation for why Jessi was kicked off the show, you can sign this petition. There is a second petition, which is entitled, “Viewers Should Get to Vote if Jessica Peralta should come back to SYTYCD,” which you can sign here. Links courtesy of Fangasm.

No new episode of SYTYCD this week

Due to the Independence Day holiday, there is no new episode of So You Think You Can Dance this week. I am sure that the dancers are happy to have a break, as they have been going non-stop all season.

If you are still in need of a SYTYCD fix today, check out this interview with the judges. The interview was conducted by none other than Season 2 champion Benji Schwimmer. The interview is part of a longer online show called Reality Remix on the Fox Reality site, so you will have to watch several minutes of coverage of other reality shows before getting to Benji.

In the interview, Benji asked Nigel if Jessi’s health was the main reason that she was sent home and Nigel said “Not at all.” Mary Murphy said that since all of the solos were poor, they went back and looked at the whole season and even the auditions when making their decision to cut Jessi.

Donyelle Jones Update

One of my favorite dancers from season two of So You Think You Can Dance?, Donyelle Jones, regularly posts video blogs and other updates to her MySpace page. She keeps her fans up on the events in her dancing career. She has been keeping busy by teaching dance and also choreographing a show with Wayne Brady at the Venetian in Las Vegas. She has also created a really funny website called “The Bad Dance Company.” It features videos of people dancing badly as a way to relieve stress and have fun. Check out this link for a video of last year’s champ Benji Schwimmer showing off his “bad dancing.” It features a cameo by his sister and current SYTYCD contestant Lacey.

Here is a video of Donyelle showing off her bad dancing:

A tale of two cha-chas

Here are two videos from YouTube which show the two versions of the cha cha that Pasha danced last week: one with stand-in partner Melanie and the other with now-kicked-off partner Jessi.

Which version did you prefer? The one with Pasha and Jessi had more chemistry, but do you think that the judges at all compared Jessi’s technique with the professional dancer who stood-in for her? Do you think that was part of her demise? Or maybe Jessi’s cha-cha did not play into their decision at all because, as many have suggested, the judges already had their minds made up that Jessi was to be sent home?

Thanks to genrocks over at the SYTYCD LiveJournal for the links.

Kristy Swanson says she is not a homewrecker

Former Dancing with the Stars contestant Kristy Swanson told People Magazine that she is “not a home wrecker.” Kristy was arrested for her participation in an altercation with Marcia O’Brien, the former wife of her Dancing with the Stars partner Lloyd Eisler, with whom Kristy has a child. Although Lloyd was married to Marcia at the time that his relationship to Kristy began, Kristy insists that Lloyd and Marcia were already separated. Marcia was eight months pregnant at the time.

As for the altercation that led to her arrest, Kristy says that Marcia attacked her and she is “confident that after the investigation is complete, the truth will come out.”

Based on the solos, Jesàºs was the weakest

Here is a great video from YouTube that shows all three of the solos from the men last night on So You Think You Can Dance. You can see that Danny and Neil really did outshine Jesàºs and if the decision was based on the solos, then I think the judges made the right decision. The only problem that I have is the inconsistency of the judges, who base elimination on the whole season’s body of work one week and strictly the solos the next week.
