Dancing with the Stars on Oprah

oprah-winfrey.jpgThis morning on The Oprah Winfrey Show was the “Dancing with the Stars Extravaganza.” Oprah sat a table with host Tom Bergeron and judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli sat at their judges’ table. The whole set was transformed to look like the DWTS ballroom.

The prior dance champions performed on the show, starting with Helio Castroneves and Julianne Hough, who performed a Cha Cha Cha. Helio said that season four champ Apolo Anton Ohno is the one that got him to do DWTS. Julianne and Helio denied that they were dating and said that they are good friends. Julianne said that other people want them to be together more than they want to be together.

Drew Lacey and Cheryl Burke performed their signature “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy” freestyle dance. Drew said that he was intimidated to go on Oprah because it is the only show with a bigger viewing audience that DWTS.

Derek Hough was on the show because he surprised an unsuspecting DWTS fan at a dance class. He trained her to dance and then they performed later in the show.

First season champs Kelly Monaco and Alec Mazo performed to “Let’s Get Loud.” Kelly said that her body had no muscle memory from when she danced several years ago on the show.

Season three champions Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke performed the mambo. Emmitt said that Oprah is the only one who could convince him to come out of dancing retirement. He said that DWTS changed his life and that people come up to him all the time and want to dance with him. Emmitt’s wife wants him to teach her to dance, but he would rather have a professional teach her so that she doesn’t get angry with him. Carrie Ann said that Emmitt being on the show made it okay for a “manly man” to dance. Cheryl said that it was great to work with Emmitt because is the manliest man. At that point, her other former partner Drew Lachey got up like he was going to leave.

The new season cast was introduced. The biggest audience cheers came for, from what I could tell, Kristi Yamagouchi and Shannon Elizabeth. Priscilla Presley said that she wanted to be on the show since the first season and that everyone has a dancer in them. Marlee Matlin said that because she uses her hands and body to speak, because she is deaf, it is similar to what dancers do. Jason Taylor said that he is “a lot nervous” to do DWTS and that he spoke with other athletes that had done the show: Emmitt, Jerry Rice, and Helio.  Mario said that he is still a little nevous, despite having dance experience and being an entertainer.

Penn Jillette said that he has never even seen the show and joked that after watching the show today, he thinks that he made a horrible mistake.  He joked “I was born to dance.  Look at me.”  Kristi said that she is afraid of the judges and having to look at them when she is critiqued, which is different than in ice skating.  Steven Gutenberg joked that he was told he was doing The Bachelor, so he doesn’t know what is going on.  He said that DWTS is his mom’s favorite show.  He added that meeting the other contestants, he feels like it is a real group thing.  Penn said it wasn’t, adding, “You’re going down, Gutenberg.”
